Five Flowers Native to Australia

Australia is so large in size, it should be no surprise that there is a greatly varied climate across the continent. This allows for unique plant life with many species only being natively found in Australia. The following flowers are native to Australia with few, if any, species being found naturally outside of Australia.

Banksia

All Banksia flower species are naturally found in Australia except one. These cone shaped flowers come in a variety of colours and are actually hundreds (or thousands) of tiny flowers on the cone. They are very attractive to birds and insects and make great additions to flower arrangements.

Bottlebrushes (Callistemon)

These members of the Myrtle family are also made up of several tiny flowers. Bottlebrushes come in bright shades of red, pink, yellow, and orange and can be found in many different climates. These bushy flowers make a great statement when added to a flower arrangement.

Eucalyptus

While not a traditional flower, eucalyptus is often found in the greenery of flower arrangements. This diverse plant is used in several ways, including medicinal uses. A cousin to the bottlebrush, eucalypt flowers are also sometimes used in flower arrangements even though it is the leaves that are most common.

Kangaroo Paw

Kangaroo Paw is a uniquely Australian flower that comes in a spectrum of different colours. It is named for the shape of the flower which looks similar to an outstretched kangaroo paw. These special flowers make great accent flowers in bouquets, or look stuning on their own.

Waratahs

These vibrant flowers are well known as the floral emblem of New South Wales. With brightly coloured flowers, Waratahs make beautiful flower arrangements. Thse flowers are so memorable that they are frequently used as the subject in art pieces, which may be one of the best ways to enjoy them, as they are protected in the bush.

Some of these flowers are more common in the flower shop than others. If you have a favourite, it is worth asking your florist to incorporate them in your arrangement. Natives make some of the most extraordinary flower arrangements, and offer a wonderful change from more traditional bouquets.
